What is a Transparent PCB? Materials, Manufacturing, and Uses

A transparent PCB uses a see-through base material. Below, we explain what it is, the materials used to make it, and its manufacturing process. We also explore its uses in the electronics industry. To start us off, here is the definition.

What is a Transparent PCB?

A transparent PCB is a type of printed circuit board that uses a see-through substrate to hold components and circuit traces. It contrasts with the conventional PCB that uses opaque materials, such as FR-4.

The material is usually either clear or partially clear, depending on the material used to make it. In most cases, the circuitry is copper and visible through the transparent or translucent base.

A transparent circuit board is also a flexible or rigid type. Again, the material determines the flexibility, in addition to clarity and other features, as we will learn below.

Transparent PCB Materials

Various materials can make transparent printed circuit boards. They include glass, select polymers, and transparent ceramics. Below are the characteristics of each material and the reasons for its use.

Glass Substrates

Glass PCB boards offer a high transmittance level of above 95% and can allow 360° luminescence. The glass is usually a tempered type for strength or sapphire for more demanding applications.

In addition to higher transparency, glass offers excellent flatness for symmetry. It also impressively resists heat and deformation. Glass PCB materials also withstand wear and are recyclable, making them eco-friendly.

Clear Polymers

These are polymers that allow light through. The types that PCB manufacturers use to make transparent boards include polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and liquid crystal polymer (LCP).

Polycarbonate is a sturdy material that also resists impact, while PET is lightweight and highly transparent. On the other hand, PMMA and LCP offer good transmittance and resistance to damage.

See-Through Ceramics

Ceramic materials include alumina, aluminum oxide, and magnesium oxide. Although not as transparent as glass, ceramic materials offer various other benefits. They resist extreme heat and moisture.

The material also has excellent electrical insulation properties and high thermal conductivity. Additionally, it has a low thermal expansion coefficient that makes it stable at higher temperatures.

How is a Transparent PCB Made?

The transparent PCB manufacturing process follows similar steps to those of the conventional opaque board. It mainly differs in the type of material and a few unique requirements.

Material Selection

The manufacturer determines the materials to use. Transparent PCB materials must meet various requirements, such as optical, electrical, and thermal performance. They also produce the laminate or source it from outside.

Circuit Design

Here, the engineer decides how the final product will look using a computer program. The design takes care of all requirements, including manufacturability and testing.

The designer generates production files from the design information. The most used format is Gerber files. The fabrication process relies on these files to automate the PCB fabrication process.

Metallization

The laminate undergoes a few preparation steps. These include cleaning and cutting it to size. The material then gets laminated with a conductive metal layer, usually a thin copper foil.

The foil will form the circuitry. Various other materials can form the traces. However, copper is the standard owing to its excellent electrical, thermal, and other properties.

Etching and Plating

After metallization, the board goes through a photolithography process to print the required circuitry. The printing process uses light and photoresist, a masking material.

An etching process removed unwanted copper, leaving the connective traces. Another process removes the photoresist, and the laminate is now ready for drilling and hole-plating as needed.

Coating

After drilling and plating, the next production stage involves applying a solder mask to the solderable areas. The mask offers protection against corrosion, short-circuits, and damage from the elements. It also strengthens the pads.

In the next step, the bare PCB receives the outermost layer that contains component markings and other information. We call the layer silkscreen or legend.

Testing

The final process involves inspecting and testing the PCB for design or fabrication defects. The board is then mounted with components or shipped to the client, depending on whether the customer needs it bare or assembled.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Transparent PCB

The transparency serves both functional and aesthetic benefits. That said, the clear PCB also has a few limitations. Let’s start with the advantages and their application benefits.

Advantages

  • Aesthetics — the transparency makes the circuit board visually appealing with a sleek, modern look. This benefit is especially crucial in consumer products.
  • Space Savings — transparent substrates allow electronic manufacturers to integrate lighting components into the substrates. That saves space, enabling the creation of smaller products.
  • Easy Inspection — the see-through nature allows a clear view of components and traces. That, in turn, makes their inspection easier to spot defects, such as damage and misalignment.
  • Unique Applications — some applications can only use the clear circuit board. They include optical sensors, displays, and illumination devices.

Disadvantages

  • Low Yield — the manufacturing process of clear circuit boards is more complex, which lowers production yield compared to conventional boards.
  • Higher Cost — the specialized materials manufacturing steps increase the cost of these circuit boards.
  • Component Limitations — their clarity needs of these circuit boards limit the number of components or traces they can hold, making high-density boards more challenging to produce.

Transparent PCB Applications

The see-through PCB has many uses in electronic devices and systems. We selected the most common when the board offers its transmissivity benefits. They include the following.

  • Optical sensors
  • Transparent screens/displays
  • Infrared windows
  • LED and other lighting
  • Electronic keyboards
  • Control panels
  • Imaging equipment
  • Electronic contact lenses

The above applications cut across these industries: consumer products, telecommunications, industrial electronics, medical devices, aerospace electronics, and military/defense systems.

Conclusion

Transparent PCBs serve functional and aesthetic purposes in electronic displays, lighting, and various other electronic products. Understanding its features and applications can help you get the most out of it, including making the right materials choice.
