What is High Voltage PCB?

A high-voltage PCB is any printed circuit board operating at a higher voltage than the standard PCB voltage. 

Devices such as inverters, electric car chargers, and power supplies are included. In addition, there is no specific value that defines a high-voltage PCB. Some people use a voltage of at least 100V as a characteristic of a high-voltage PCB, but please note that this is not an official statement.

Various design methods must be considered when standard voltages are exceeded or the printed circuit board will break or fail. Before designing a printed circuit board, the designer must understand essential insulation, available insulation, height, dirt distance, reinforced insulation, double insulation, additional insulation, conductive components, etc.

The materials used in high-voltage PCB designs must maintain optimal performance in both standard and overvoltage environments. Consider the following materials as key components of the PCB:

Board material

When selecting materials for a PCB, the board is the primary consideration. It is the foundation for the rest of the PCB's functionality. Therefore, consider all design elements when purchasing the material. BT epoxy provides good resistance due to its robust sidewalls but is only suitable for a few applications.

Copper

Copper used to make PCB vias should be heavy enough to resist high currents and mechanical stress. Thick copper (4-10 oz.) or extra-thick copper (10-50 oz.) circuits and materials should be used on the PCB.

Resin and glass

Although not a major PCB component, the amount of resin and glass in the board affects its durability in high-voltage environments. Plates with high resin content and tiny glass fiber structures provide the best dielectric properties.
