What is a Pick and Place Machine for PCB Assembly?

A pick and place machine is essential equipment in PCB assembly (PCBA). It automates the assembly process, increasing production speed and reducing human errors, among other benefits. Below is an overview of how it works.

What is a Pick and Place Machine?

A pick and place machine is an automated device that picks electronic components from feeders and places them precisely onto the PCB. In PCB manufacturing, it helps mount components on printed circuit boards before soldering.

The machine uses a robotic head to pick up the parts and position them at designated locations on the PCB. The parts are typically SMD devices, such as integrated circuits (ICs), resistors, and capacitors.

By automating component placement, the device enables PCB manufacturers to handle high-volume assembly needs. It helps reduce production costs, minimize assembly errors, and meet production deadlines.

A typical pick and place robot can accurately position thousands of components per hour, depending on its type and construction. The following sections explain its construction and working.

Parts of a Pick and Place Machine

A PCB assembly P&P machine consists of these main parts: component delivery/feeder system, pickup arm/head, vision system, conveyor, and controls.

Component Feeder: Holds and delivers components that the robotic head can mount on the PCB. The feeder can be a tape-and-reel, tray, or tube (stick) feeder.

Pick Up Head/Nozzle: The head utilizes vacuum suction to hold components before placing them on the circuit board.

Vision Systems: Use high-resolution digital cameras and other types of sensors to automate the pickup and placement process.

XY Motion System: It consists of high-precision motors and other actuators that move various parts in controlled motion, including the robotic head.

Conveyor Belt: For positioning circuit boards underneath the P&P head and moving them away after component placement.

Computer Controls: The heart of the P&P machine. It uses a computer program to control the machine’s operation, from component and PCB feeding to placing parts.

How Does a Pick and Place Machine Work?

An SMT pick and place machine works by automatically picking components, such as capacitors and resistors, and placing them on a printed circuit board. The process takes the following steps.

PCB Loading

A conveyor runs through the machine, bringing PCBs in for mounting. A computer vision system ensures its proper positioning and alignment, while a clamping mechanism holds it in place.

A high-speed pick & place machine usually has multiple parts, such as pick up heads, for concurrent placement. These are common in large-volume productions.

Component Feeding

Another system transports surface-mount components to the machine via reels or trays. The feeders typically advance the required parts to the pickup station, where a robotic arm can easily pick them up.

Component PickUp

Vacuum nozzles lift electronic components from the feeder. Before the PCB enters the machine, solder paste has already been applied via a stencil printer to designated pads. These paste deposits act as an adhesive to hold the components in place during high-speed movement.

Inspection and Placement

Meanwhile, an optical system checks the component’s alignment and polarity (rotation) before placement. Damaged parts are discarded. The control system also ensures the parts are correctly aligned before placement.

The head then uses XY coordinates and fiducial marks on the PCB to know where to place each component. Like picking, it must be gentle, with controlled pressure to prevent damage or misplacement.

PCB Transfer to Soldering Station

The circuit board now has components mounted and ready for soldering. The conveyor transfers the board from the P&P machine to the assembly station, which is usually a heating and reflow oven.

Here, controlled heat melts the solder, bonding the components to the board. Accuracy in the paste application and parts placement steps ensures reliable electrical and mechanical connections.

Pick and Place Machine Advantages in PCB Assembly

P&P devices are a fundamental part of PCB assembly processes. Their automated picking and other steps offer these advantages over manual placement.

Increased Production Speed

The device works at a very high speed. It increases efficiency during printed circuit board assembly, reducing costs and improving yield. It enables PCB manufacturers to make the product in large quantities.

High Accuracy and Precision

Machine placement offers consistency and precision. It minimizes human errors in manufacturing, making the process highly accurate. That, in turn, reduces assembly faults and improves the quality of PCB assemblies.

Flexible PCB Assembly

The P&P machine is highly adaptable. It places small and large components with ease, and can handle both simple and complex boards. More importantly, it can accept different types of PCBs without significant changes.

Types of Pick and Place Machines

A P&P device can be a type that requires manual intervention. It can also be fully automatic and work autonomously, requiring only observation. Let’s understand the two options in more detail below.

Semi-Automatic P&P Machine

This type has a few operator steps. For instance, it requires the operator to load the circuit boards. Being a low-speed device, it is well-suited for small batches or low volumes, including prototypes.

The semi-automatic P&P device can be a compact desktop type or a floor-standing unit. The preference depends on production needs and the nature of assembly.

Fully Automatic P&P Machine

A fully automatic type automates every step of the parts-placement process. These include component feeding, pick up/release, and circuit board positioning and alignment.

It’s a high-speed machine that can place hundreds of components per minute, making it ideal for high production runs. PCB assemblers usually integrate it with existing machinery to automate entire production cycles.

Conclusion

A pick and place machine automates component placement in PCB assembly. In addition to enabling bulk manufacturing, it improves precision and accuracy. PCB manufacturers use the device to handle both low and high production lines, ensuring quality and reducing assembly costs.
